Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Here is a list of frequently asked questions about VX and how it operates. Select from the list of questions below.

Modeling

What is the best way to utilize VX in a "concurrent engineering" environment?

Answer:

The concurrent engineering ability of VX largely resides in the part/sub-part paradigm -- where a part can be divided into sub-parts in different files, but merged into one part via the component merge commands. By subdividing a part into sub-parts linked by reference geometry, multiple users can work on portions of a part in different files. When the top-level "master" part is regenerated, the latest saved versions of the parts are re-merged into the parent part -- drawn from their respective files.

Where does my sketch or curve list go after I use it to create a feature?

Answer:

When you use a sketch or curve list to create a feature, they are automatically blanked when the feature is created. If you want to display them, set the pick filter to Features and double-left-click on the feature to "show" all of it's related sketches, curve lists, dimensions and/or components. You can also right-click on the feature and select Show from the Object Editorpopup menu.

How do I create a 3D wire frame section in the model?

Answer:

Use the Dynamic Sectioning command.  You will need an existing datum plane to locate the section.  You can also create sections offset to the datum plane.  With the display set to Shade, you can dynamically drag the section plane to display cut-a-way views of the part.

How do I define "USER" line and hidden line attributes?

Answer:

Pay attention to the size (2**n) where n=(0-4)

Don’t change the name USER

How do I measure a distance with respect to a user defined plane (or face)?

GUI

I'm confused about the use of the middle mouse button in VX.

Answer:

The middle mouse button (MB) tells VX to accept the last input logged with the system. Pressing the <Enter> key when the text input field is inactive (or is active but has not input) also accepts the last input.

When VX automatically shows a value in the text input field, it is showing you the current input value that has already been logged with the system. In some cases, like the fillet command, this value is automatically logged as a default. If you press the MB, or press <Enter>, this input is accepted. If you want to change the value, you have to activate the text input field, type in the new value and press the <Enter> key, which causes the new text input to be accepted. If you type in the text and press MB, you'll still get the last input logged with the system, not what you see in the window. That is because the MB is not recognized by Windows as the <Enter> key for text input.

You might ask, why doesn't VX override Windows and make the MB act like the <Enter> key when text has been typed into the text input area. VX avoids doing this so that you have a way of accepting the last (or default) input after new text has been put in the text input area. If the original input was immediately lost as soon as you started typing in the text input area, you'd be stuck if you decided you wanted to keep the default input. Once you type new text in the text input field (or VX dynamic echo puts a new value there temporarily), you have to apply a keyboard <Enter> event to the text field to cause it to replace the default input. Up until that point, you can use the MB to ignore the temporary text input and use the default input.

What's the difference between using F6 and "Alt+Pick"?

Answer:

If you are trying to pick an entity when it is coincident with more than one other entity, use F6 to scroll through all entities that cross the pick aperture. When you get to the one you want, press <Enter>. "Alt-Pick" can be used to get "the other" entity in the case that there are just two coincident entities -- or that you are trying to get "the other face" from an edge pick -- but you have to go to F6 when there are more than two overlapping entities.

Online Help

Why can't I see the Glossary during VX Interactive help?

Answer:

The Glossary tab is initially disabled during VX Interactive Help.  This occurs in the compiled version of VX help (i.e., when VX is set to "iexplore.exe" as the default web browser on the Files tab of the VX Configuration Form).

If you want to use the Glossary during VX Interactive Help, you need to pick the "Home" icon on the top toolbar of the help browser and then select the "Glossary" tab.  This only has to be done once during a VX interactive help session.

Assembly

How do I get component parts to regenerate when the assembly is activated?

Answer:

From the Assembly Manager, right click on the component and pick "REGEN".

CAM

How do I output a tool path to the IMS Post processor?

Answer:

  1. Create a new VX User (by loading VX setup and ONLY creating a new user).

  2. Copy the directory "output_def" into this new directory. The output_def directory is in the main installed VX directory. This is the directory that contains the file "runpost.bat".

  3. Modify "runpost.bat" so the path of the IMSpexec.exe is correct for your computer. Mine is: "set IMSPOST_PATH=C:\IMS\IMSpost70b" but yours may be different.

  1. From the server, PING the client.

  1. On both machines, run ipconfig /all.

  2. Look to see if the DHCP setting is the same on both. If not, pick another machine as the license server.

cd C:\vxserver

vxserversvc.exe -stop

vxserversvc.exe -debug -dbgprt (Don't click in the window to select it. If you do, hit ENTER)

I am still having problems installing a license, what now?

Answer:

If you are using the hardware key, plug it in to the parallel port.

If you are using the new purple hardware keys, plug it into the USB port. Win NT does not support usb. You must have W2K or Win XP.
